ResourceSmart students inspire Werribee to be more sustainable

Member for Werribee Tim Pallas has congratulated Werribee Primary School on being a finalist in the Energy Primary School of the Year award for this year’s ResourceSmart Schools Awards.

Werribee Primary School has taken practical action to meet specific energy reductions and demonstrate sustainability leadership internally within the wider community.

Over the course of the year, the school’s 27kW solar system generated 27% of its electricity. At the sunniest point of a sunny day that rises to 48%. Data shows 4000 kWh generated in June 2016.

A record number of entries were received this year, with over 205 entries from more than 100 schools across the state.

“The success of ResourceSmart Schools comes down to its practical and hands-on approach to learning for students,” Mr Pallas said.

“So many Victorian schools have joined the program because they see the value in teaching students the importance of living sustainably, and providing opportunities for students to be real change-makers.”

“The school prides itself on its students who are ‘change champions’.”
The ResourceSmart SchoolsAwards are Victoria’s largest sustainability awards program that recognises Victorian schools, early childhood services, students and teachers for implementing measures to reduce their environmental footprint.

All finalists demonstrate to the Victorian community how to take local action on climate change and how we can all work towards embedding sustainability in everything we do at school and at home.

Around 50 per cent of Victorian schools have participated in ResourceSmart Schools, delivering substantial environmental savings to their schools.

Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on Friday 11 November 2016 at Melbourne Museum.
