MEMBERS STATEMENT: YOUTH JUSTICE FACILITY SITE VISIT

I rise to report on the Andrews Government’s $288 million investment in my Werribee electorate.

With the new Minister for Youth Justice Ben Carroll we visited the site to see the early works of the new Youth Justice Facility at Cherry Creek. It will be a place to rehabilitate youth and give them a second chance.

Particularly impressive is the design of the Youth Justice Centre. It provides an area for reflection with a view to the nearby You Yangs — a site of spiritual indigenous connection to the local land.
Our Government is committed to the safety of all Victorians. We have invested in record police numbers and are delivering the resources our Police force needs to be tough on crime.

But any Government who is serious about tackling crime must also be serious about rehabilitation. Education and training programs will be a focus for these young people so they can make a better life for themselves.

And our community has a chance to contribute to the rehabilitation of these youth. The facility will create 450 jobs locally across a number of different roles and more than 2000 during the construction in Cherry Creek.

I look forward to seeing the progress of this facility.
