SAY NO TO NAPTHINE’S $8 BILLION TUNNEL

Victorian Labor is opposed to Denis Napthine’s plan to spend $8 billion of taxpayers’ money on a 5km tunnel that will do nothing to tackle the congestion problems facing our state.

Not even the simplest questions about this project can be answered.

There is no business case, no traffic numbers, no sense of how the finances of this project work, and no benefit for the vast majority of Victorians, including those in Melbourne’s west.

Victorians don’t want $8 billion of their money spent on a tunnel with no business case and no proper planning that would benefit only a fraction of Victoria’s motorists.

What’s more, Denis Napthine’s $8 billion tunnel puts every other road and public transport project on the back burner for years.

No one voted for this tunnel or for this Premier. And if the Premier signs the contracts on the project a few weeks before the next State Election, as he intends, no one will ever get to vote on it.

Victorian Labor will release our transport alternative before the end of the year – a detailed, costed and comprehensive proposal to improve the whole state.

Before Denis Napthine spends $8 billion of taxpayers’ money on this tunnel, he should seek a mandate from the people of Victoria and take it to an election.
